Savannah, GA - Adrienne Gaines Ayers passed away on May 30, 2007, at the Hospice Savannah House after a short illness.
She was born on July 11, 1917, in Hart County, Georgia, to Samuel N. Ayers and Adrienne Gaines Ayers. She grew up in the Reed Creek Community and was one of seven children.
After she graduated from LaGrange College, she taught school for several years in Cobb County, Georgia. She then went to work for the United States State Department where she was stationed in Stockholm, Sweden, Lahore, Pakistan, and Lyon, France. She left the State Department to study French in France. She eventually received her Master’s degree in French from Middlebury College in Vermont. She was a high school French teacher with the Montgomery County School System in Maryland until she retired. She became a docent at the National Cathedral after she retired. She resided in the Washington, D.C. area until she moved to Savannah six years ago to live with her sister.
She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Ayers Chandler, and fourteen nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the Wilmington Island Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, June 5, 2007, at 4:00 p.m.
